01The firm

A small Cotswold landscape firm, run by the Hartleys since 1998.

Tom Hartley started the firm out of a single van in Burford in 1998. Twenty-seven years on, his sons Lewis and Joe run the day-to-day alongside him, and the yard now turns out about forty gardens a year — from a 12m² courtyard patio to a full back-garden rebuild. The lads on site are the same six people, year in, year out.

We work mostly within thirty miles of Burford. We’re fully insured, registered with Checkatrade, Which? Trusted Trader and the Association of Professional Landscapers. The first thing we’ll do is come and walk the garden with you — for free, no obligation.

We had three quotes for the patio. Hartley’s came in middle of the three but they were the only ones who turned up when they said they would, sent a written quote within 48 hours, and were tidy on site. The patio is two years old now and still looks brand new.

Tom and the lads put up 60m of slatted fencing for us last autumn. Plumb, level, no fuss, finished a day early. They took the old fence away and even patched up where the dog had been digging.

Lewis comes once a fortnight to keep the garden in order. It’s the same face every time, the work is done properly, and he always finds time for a cup of tea with my mum. Honestly the best £260 a month we spend.
